Abstract
Over the past 18 years, the WHO Task Force on Vaccines for
Fertility Regulation has been supporting basic and clinical research on the
development of birth control vaccines directed against the gametes or the
preimplantation embryo. These studies have involved the use of advanced
procedures in peptide chemistry, hybridoma technology and molecular genetics
as well as the evaluation of a number of novel approaches in general
vaccinology. As a result of this inter national, collaborative effort, a
prototype anti-HCG vaccine is now undergoing clinical testing, raising the
prospect that a totally new family planning method may be available before
the end of the current decade.

front for sterilizing the nation. Dr. Haruna Kaita, a pharmaceutical
scientist and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ahmadu
Bello University in Zaria, took samples of the vaccine to labs in India
for analysis.
Using WHO-recommended technologies like Gas
Chromatography (GC) and Radio-Immuno assay, Dr. Kaita, upon analysis,
found evidence of serious contamination. "Some of the things we
discovered in the vaccines are harmful, toxic; some have direct effects
on the human reproductive system," he said in an interview with Kaduna's
Weekly Trust. "I and some other professional colleagues who are Indians
who were in the Lab could not believe the discovery," he said.

Nigerian government doctor tried to persuade Dr. Kaita that the
contaminants would have no bearing on human reproduction. "…I was
surprised when one of the federal government doctors was telling me
something contrary to what I have learned, studied, taught and is the
common knowledge of all pharmaceutical scientists -- that estrogen
cannot induce an anti-fertility response in humans," he said. "I found
that argument very disturbing and ridiculous."
When asked by the
Trust why Dr. Kaita felt the drug manufacturers would have contaminated
the Oral Polio Vaccine, he gave three reasons: "These manufacturers or
promoters of these harmful things have a secret agenda which only
further research can reveal. Secondly they have always taken us in the
third world for granted, thinking we don't have the capacity, knowledge
and equipment to conduct tests that would reveal such contaminants. And
very unfortunately they also have people to defend their atrocities
within our midst, and worst still some of these are supposed to be our
own professionals who we rely on to protect our interests."
Dr.
Kaita is demanding that "those who imported this fake drug in the name
of Polio Vaccines…be prosecuted like any other criminal."

contraceptive vaccine development are being pursued at the present time. The
most advanced approach, which has already reached the stage of phase 2 clinical
trials [human trials testing efficacy], involves the induction of immunity
against human chorionic gonadotro-phin (hCG). Vaccines are being engineered ...
incorporating tetanus or diptheria toxoid linked to a variety of hCG-based
peptides... Clinical trials have revealed that such preparations are capable of
stimulating the production of anti-hCG antibodies. However, the long-term
consequences of such immunity in terms of safety or efficacy are, as yet,
unknown...The authors are talking about creating an immune response against a

International accused the WHO of promoting a Canadian-made tetanus vaccine laced

Derek Lovley is a Distinguished
Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of
Massachusetts. Research in his laboratory focuses on anaerobic
microbial processes that impact the natural cycling of carbon
and metals in soils and sediments, bioremediation of hydrocarbon
and metal contamination, and novel bioenergy strategies that
involve microbe-electrode interactions. These topics are
addressed with a systems biology approach that incorporates
genome-scale metabolic modeling, functional genomics,
biochemistry, physiology, genetic engineering, and environmental
meta-omic studies.
Derek Lovley received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Michigan
State University and was a postdoctoral researcher at the
Anaerobe Laboratory at Virginia Tech prior to joining the U.S.
Geological Survey as a Project Chief in their National Basic
Research Program in 1984. He moved his laboratory to the
Department of Microbiology at the University of Massachusetts in
1995, where he served as department head from 1997-2004 and now
serves as Director of Environmental Biotechnology and as an
Associate Dean for the College of Natural Sciences. Dr. Lovley
has received many awards including Popular Science’s “Best of
What’s New in Environmental Technology,” as well as the Proctor
and Gamble Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, the
Annual International Conference on Soils, Sediments, and Water
Life Achievement Award, and the Institute for Scientific
Information’s “Most Highly Cited” (H-factor 86). His research
has received substantial coverage in the popular press. He was
featured in Time magazine’s profile of top innovators in
environmental science and recently was also cited in Time for
one of the top 50 inventions for 2009. He has served as the
Associate Editor for Anaerobe and was on the editorial boards of
Applied and Environmental Microbiology, FEMS Microbiology
Reviews, and FEMS Microbiology Ecology. He has more than 300
publications and edited the book Environmental Microbe-Metal
Interactions. He has several patents, including patents for
microbial nanowires and uranium bioremediation.
Dr. Lovley's research is focused on the physiology and ecology of
novel anaerobic microorganisms. Current topics of investigation
include: in situ groundwater bioremediation; microbial fuel
cells; directed and natural evolution of anaerobic respiration;
anaerobic biofilms; and extracellular electron transfer mechanisms.
These studies are being approached at the genome scale and involve
genetic, biochemical, ecological, and in silico modeling
approaches. Research ranges from basic physiological studies to
collaborations with industry to optimize the function of microbial fuel
cells.
