The BBC has reported that seven very important people right now hold the keys to rebooting the internet in the event of a global catastrophy.
In the event of a cyber attack at least five of these seven people - who will be scattered throughout the world - will be required to travel to a base in the US and boot the internet up again.
The safety initiative, known as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - or ICANN - has a security protocol system known which protects the integrity of website addresses and ensures websites are legitimate.
The BBC spoke to the UK's representative Paul Kane, based at the University of Bath.
